Dear friends, clients and colleagues,
It is with great sorrow that we write to let you know that our dear friend and colleague of so many years, John O’Connor, passed away on Sunday, April 26th. John had received a cancer diagnosis in the early Fall of 2019 and despite initial positive responses to treatment, the disease progressed rapidly and took him from us this past weekend. John spent his last week at home surrounded by his wife, extended family and loved ones, and for that we are very grateful.
In John we lose a great friend but also a key contributor to CMI’s success over the years. John joined the team in 1999 and, as our longstanding CTO, was instrumental in engineering CMI’s transition from analog video to a 100% digital content processing and delivery company. Not one to sing his own praises, John nevertheless was an early and frequent contributor to technical forums in the Inflight Entertainment Industry and helped guide the creation, testing and deployment of its first VOD formats.
When it came to anything to do with the moving image, John was in his element. He was an engineer’s engineer; passionately driven with a near obsessive focus on efficiency of process and the highest thresholds for quality. John was always willing to explain the ins and outs of video to anyone curious enough to ask. He just loved what he did. “A kid from Staten Island”, as he used to say, John was a proud product of NY State education, graduating from the prestigious Brooklyn Tech High School before pursuing higher learning at CUNY and SUNY Purchase. Prior to joining CMI, John had spent over 17 years working at many of New York City’s top production houses. In 1989, John received the Primetime Emmy Award for “Outstanding Achievement in Visual Effects” which he shared with director Zbigniew Rybczyński.
Words cannot begin to express the void John leaves in our midst. He was a kind, self-effacing man with a wry sense of humor and always a twinkle in his eye. Many are the fond memories we have of him. He will be sorely missed.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Please feel free to contact CMI should you be interested in attending or need additional information.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yelena Makarczyk.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Yelena. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My childhood gave me many perspectives. I am a captain’s daughter, an admiral’s niece, a Ukrainian farmer’s granddaughter, and a descendant of the aristocratic St. Petersburg/Moscow elite. My trajectory has ranged from the Soviet industrial Krivoy Rog to the cultural St. Petersburg, from the wonders of Kamchatka to solemn Moscow and sensual Crimea, with plenty of visits along the way to the well-known crevices of the deep Slavic soul. Being around my Captain father and his sailor friends provided me with a deep respect for different situations and cultures.
